The Draghi report: How Europe can become fit for a competitive digital future

27 January 2025 at 16:45

We must unlock our innovative potential. This will be key not only to lead in new technologies, but also to integrate AI into our existing industries so that they can stay at the front.

Mario Draghi

Europe faces significant challenges in staying competitive in a rapidly evolving digital world dominated by the US and China. The Draghi report sheds light on the EU’s dependence on foreign technology, the need for innovation, and actionable strategies for building a resilient digital economy. In this post, we explore the report’s key insights, highlight the pressing issues, and discuss what they mean for the tech industry and Europe’s digital future.

In September 2024, the European Union published a report by Mario Draghi highlighting Europe’s competitiveness and future ability and opportunities to compete.

1The main drive to create the report was the worry that Europe, in comparison to other stakeholders, is too slow in its economic development and growth: “The EU is weak in the emerging technologies that will drive future growth. Only four of the world’s top 50 tech companies are European.

In a world that faces increasing uncertainties, economic stability and growth means the ability to make its own choices for Europe. The sovereignty that we push for will be lost if we are unable to fix the systemic issues that hold us back and Europe is exposed to the will and arbitrariness of the techno-imperialism of other countries.

These issues have been driving us at Nextcloud for the past decade, and we read the report with the utmost attention, but left wondering how much of this will actually be realized.

The report gives a comprehensive analysis of where EU came from and where it is heading. It outlines the basic principles and in what way they are being threatened in the current climate of geopolitical tensions and decreased velocity of economic growth, as opposed to American and Chinese markets.

It comprises two parts, divided into strategy and analyses with actionable recommendations. Part A offers a meticulous review of where Europe is at, how it developed up to this point, and the events that led to it and the many challenges it faces on economic, societal, digital as well as political level. This gives rise to the following pressing questions:

  • How can Europe promote growth and foster innovation, while setting the guardrails for a secure and thriving digital economy?
  • How can Europe’s independence be secured and harmonized, and streamlined yet effective regulation be implemented and enforced across borders?
  • How can Europe become a global digital player and serious partner for both China and the US?

Those big questions will not be answered in full but they offer an idea of the vast scope of challenges lying ahead. In part B, the strategy is analyzed towards actionable solutions and shows us ways how to get there.

For us at Nextcloud, the report presents many useful insights and challenges the European economy is facing to help us prepare and position in an unstable geopolitical climate and a new US government that has already taken the first steps to put America first. Even though the recommendations are addressed at the EU, one of the most important areas of development is digitization and how Europe can be sovereign and resilient in the face of hyperscalers from China and the US.

As an industry stakeholder, our interest lies in contributing to a diverse digital landscape where fair competition is fostered and supports a thriving digital economy and its fair and accessible development.

The report names the following as the most crucial challenges for Europe that need to be tackled by the current and forthcoming European Commission so as not to fall behind and protect a prosperous Europe:

  1. Digital transformation: The EU relies on foreign countries for over 80% of digital products, services, infrastructure and intellectual property. But in order to become more independent and hence resilient against unforeseeable geopolitical changes and tensions, the digital transformation is eminent in all sectors across Europe. Hence the EU must:
  • create and promote a resilient digital infrastructure
  • enhance cybersecurity
  • support sovereign AI development to increase Europe’s digital competitiveness
  • The ICT sector specifically is key to advancing Europe’s strategy to foster sovereignty such as private cloud solutions where enhanced security and encryption is required, as well as acting as a performance driver in other sectors such as pharma, energy, or defense. It is obvious that Nextcloud can play a key role here, as it is the main player that can replace Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, two foreign platforms that are currently mission-critical for many organizations in Europe.
  1. Green transition: Europe has the opportunity to be the leader in climate neutral technologies and circular economies and be the front-runner in helping industries de-carbonize and reach climate protection goals. With the US now planning to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, this is more important than ever. The big US tech firms pay lip-service to green technology, but their investments especially in AI show these words are often hollow.
  2. Innovation and research: In order to enable and boost innovation, Europe must invest in R&D, support innovation hubs and strengthen collaboration between public and private sectors. This point is especially important for us as obstacles of procurement and tenders across borders are often over-complicated, preventing collaboration and fair competition. But the differences among members states in applying and enforcing GDPR make experimenting and pioneering with AI a lot more difficult. The EU has to very carefully balance the regulatory frameworks with tolerant rules that bolster investment in innovation. The way forward is harmonized regulation that remove overlaps between GDPR and AI Act.
  3. Internal market integration: As outlined under 3 above, removing barriers within the EU to allow cross-border trade, make single market more efficient, ensure fair competition is paramount to make Europe resilient and support SME to develop and prosper. The actual competition policy in place needs to be examined under in terms of striking a balance between sufficient protection and the ability for businesses to scale and innovate particularly in comparison to Chinese and American hyperscalers.
  4. Global trade strategy autonomy: Education is at the heart of a prosperous democracy, and is especially important to promote it further so that Europe’s workforce is equipped for a digital and green future.

Overall, the digital transformation process is too slow and too weak in comparison. Currently, there are only four digital platforms that are based in the EU, the lion’s share of the market is dominated by US corporations Amazon, Alphabet (Google), Microsoft, Meta, Apple and X as well as Tencent, ByteDance, Baidu and Alibaba from China. European citizens do not have a huge choice to opt for a European solution. The problem is not only market dominance and vendor-lock ins, it is also a lack of interoperability and high security risks.

All this diminishes Europe’s chances for growth and weakens our competitive positions. So far, the DMA and DSA were enforced, and set out to be a game-changer in competition: But will it be able to go into effect quickly without stifling innovation? The DMA and DSA, which are both carefully crafted to avoid bureaucratic hurdles for smaller organizations, can play a major role in negating the huge anti-competitive gatekeeping that the big tech firms currently use to suppress competition from European IT companies.

These are the risks at stake that the EC must take into consideration when they want to secure the vast potential of cloud computing services (estimated at EUR 200 billion by 2028). But the European providers’ share has even decreased down to 16% (2021), in no small part due to the aforementioned gate keeping. This can be mitigated by decisive enforcement of the new laws by the European Commission, but unfortunately, the commission has shown little appetite for defending its IT industry. The anti-trust complaint against Microsoft, filed by us and some 40 other small EU IT companies in 2021, has still not seen any real action.

One of the key recommendations in cloud computing is the suggested EU Cloud and AI development Act that defines a “EU-wide policy and residency requirements for public administrations’ cloud services, as well as EU-wide sensitive data security policies for collaboration between private cloud providers and hyperscalers” to protect and boost EU providers and ensure a fair and competitive market.

Conclusion

Europe today stands at a decisive point: The digital strategy has brought important new legislation, but the economy is increasingly falling behind and must be made fit to be able to continue to play a key role on a global stage.

The Draghi report sheds light on the most pressing questions and offers actionable recommendations as to how to overcome these challenges and lead Europe into a secure and prosperous future. What is needed is the ability to make fast and agile decisions so as to be able to compete with China and the US, stand strong against unstable geopolitical tensions and become the role model for resilient digital regulation. Overall, the report recommends to strive for a more dynamic, resilient and sustainable economy in Europe that can compete on a global stage while ensuring social fairness and environmental responsibility.

Nextcloud powering the digital workspace of tomorrow - 2024 in review

We at Nextcloud have remained true to our vision: empowering collaboration without compromising on privacy. This year has been a testament to that commitment. Together with the passion of our global team and the support of our community we have not just build the best open-source collaboration tools, but expanded our dedication to open source itself.

In this annual wrap-up, we want to take a moment to celebrate this year’s achievements. Join us as we continue to reimagine what’s possible – shaping a world where open source, privacy and connection come together and drive progress for the greater good.

~ Nextcloud team

Charting global growth

Nextcloud is used around the world by private individuals, communities, enterprises, and governments. In 2024, millions of new users gained access through hundreds of new enterprise customers. In the wider community, exact numbers are difficult to come by but there are some 400-500K servers online and this number also continues to grow steadily, with tens of thousands of new deployments across the globe from the US to France, from Australia to Indonesia and South Africa to Hawaii.

These numbers convert in the change Nextcloud brings about, contributing to a more connected, privacy-respecting, transparent, and safer digital world – where we interact with government services, access our education, cast votes in elections, fill forms on websites and call our colleagues and friends through video chat.

Change starts with people

This year, our team has grown significantly, reflecting our success. With 20% increase in size we are now 118 strong united by a shared vision across 23 countries. That includes 7 working students who get a chance to learn the ropes at Nextcloud. While we have expanded into a bigger office space in Berlin, we remain proudly remote-first, reflecting the flexibility and global collaboration that define our culture.

Shaping collaboration of tomorrow with Nextcloud Hub

The efficient Nextcloud Hub 8

Launching Nextcloud Hub 8 under the “Regain control over your time” theme, we made it all about efficiency. With Nextcloud Assistant 2.0 bringing innovative AI features, interactive widgets connecting our apps further, advancing chat and sharing tools and ambitious architecture undertakings, this release gave you more control than ever before.

The connected Nextcloud Hub 9

Our latest release brought a major visual redesign to the platform, resulting in a slicker experience all around. But it’s not all about the looks – with a growing stack of federation features, automation centralizing under Nextcloud Flow, and further efforts to elevate performance and scaling, Nextcloud Hub 9 made headlines this September as an “Explosive release”.

Nextcloud Talk: the open-source answer to Teams

In an unrestful world of today, dependency on centralized, opaque systems under strong foreign influence is a ticking clock. It is time the open-source world had a real answer to Microsoft Teams. Nextcloud Talk is the only open-source conferencing hub that seamlessly integrates chats, video meetings and webinar functionality in one powerful, privacy-respecting platform.

We are wrapping up 2024 with a strong standalone release of Nextcloud Talk, celebrating its reinvention within Nextcloud’s product portfolio. New desktop application, new AI features, new streaming capabilities, simplified and mindful collaboration, and reinforced security (again!) – we invite you to meet the new Nextcloud Talk.

Nextcloud Talk Hub 9

Standing ground against Big Tech

In an attempt to slow down the antitrust case backed by Nextcloud and other members of the Coalition for level playing field, Microsoft has unbundled Teams from the Windows ecosystem. Such “malicious compliance” is one of the common instruments in the Big Tech arsenal used to resist the limiting market regulations. A legislation like EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) could protect fair competition further, once it targets Microsoft’s cloud products that squeeze numerous local providers from the market.

With this struggle still far from over, some results of our common efforts are evident. Earlier this year, Germany has officially recognized Microsoft as a tech giant and made it “subject to extended abuse control”, three years since the formal antitrust complaint.

When the global IT so evidently lacks digital sovereignty and resilience, we naturally consider the fight for a fair trade a part of our mission.

AI with ethical integrity

Like we said in one of the early introductions to our AI tools, some AI is hype and some is substance. And we want to give you the substance. Nextcloud does become a better version of itself with the evolving AI stack, helping you get some tasks done quicker.

The back-end, the UX, the features, and the models you can use to power up Nextcloud Assistant – this year our engineers and contributors have done work to be proud of. From context-aware features with Nextcloud Assistant 2.0 and chat UI and platform-wide integration in Nextcloud Hub 9 to new open-source AI models – you can enjoy a fully AI-powered workspace.

And most importantly, you stay in control of this powerful technology. To build the system that you can rely on and keep your data yours, you can refer to our Ethical AI Rating and decide what AI you want to use in Nextcloud Hub.

The open source answer to Microsoft Teams

3 December 2024 at 15:59

When cables are cut, sanctions are put in place or privacy legislation prohibits the use of the service your entire organization depends on, what can you do?

Amidst geo-political changes, organizations face dependencies on large, centralized communication platforms. A major example of this is the SaaS-only communication platform Microsoft Teams. It is the only solution on the market which deeply integrates video calls, team chat and large group call features with real-time document collaboration and file sharing, and has become critical to the functioning of many organizations. Which, in turn, has allowed Microsoft to hike prices by 20 to 40% and not face an exodus of customers – as they and their data are fully locked in.

Organisations, small and large, need a way to ensure the resiliency and digital sovereignty of their operations – an open source, privacy respecting alternative to Teams. And today, we present that solution.

In this short webinar, Jos walks you through how Nextcloud Talk takes on Microsoft Teams!

Welcome to Nextcloud Talk

Today, live from our Enterprise day in Paris, we launch Nextcloud Talk „Paris“. It is the only open-source solution that integrates all key features – from chats and video conferencing to webinars, complete with file sharing and office document editing – into a single platform while avoiding vendor lock-in.

Our platform meets the highest standards of compliance with privacy legislations like GDPR or HIPAA and offers strict data security, ensuring full data control. Thanks to its open architecture, Talk can be seamlessly integrated into existing systems and tailored to individual needs.

Nextcloud Talk is designed to address three key use cases. Let’s go quickly over them!

Efficient team chat

The integrated chat in Nextcloud Talk is designed to help teams stay connected throughout the workday. With multiple chat rooms and the ability to edit files directly within the chat, Talk streamlines hybrid team collaboration and boosts efficiency. End-to-end encryption ensures that calls remain private and secure, while integrated real-time notifications keep everyone in the loop. All data stays under your control, meeting the highest privacy and security standards.

It features deep integration with a wide variety of content. Users can add documents – and edit them right there, inline, without having to open tabs or download the file. Locations, tasks, calendars and notes can all be inserted, viewed and edited without leaving Talk.

Video calls for seamless collaboration

Nextcloud Talk makes virtual meetings easy and accessible across devices. Whether it’s a quick check-in or a larger team meeting, our platform ensures powerful collaboration for hybrid working teams. Features like integrated whiteboards, screen sharing, and joint document editing make real-time collaboration easier than ever. Scheduling and joining calls is effortless, directly from the Nextcloud interface, integrated with the calendar app for easy scheduling of meetings.

Interactive webinars, education and training sessions

Talk enables you to host engaging webinars – bringing audiences like teams, students, or customers together. The platform supports live streaming, Q&A sessions and screensharing and comes with moderation features. Functions like the integrated chat, animated reactions, polls and breakout rooms make the learning experience more interactive and fun. All this, and more, is available wherever you are. Not only in the browser, but also with apps on iOS and Android! When your colleague calls you while you’re out, your phone will ring and you’ll be able to share your screen to show them a quick presentation you’re working on.

You can give participants a phone number to dial in to, and even pull them in by dialing out right from Talk. Need to add hundreds, even thousands of participants? Simply import a spreadsheet. After the call, you export the participant list and see who did and did not show up!

Break up big groups in breakout rooms, enabling everyone to be productive in a smaller team before coming back together to the big group. In your breakout room you can do a call, chat, work on a whiteboard, share documents and more!

Numerous new features for better collaboration

New desktop app

No more searching through browser tabs! The new app offers desktop integration and notifications, allowing users to communicate and join calls effortlessly.

New AI features

Tired of taking notes in long meetings? Enjoy our automatically generated summaries of video meetings! Dreading those 173 unread messages in the morning? The Nextcloud Assistant summarizes them for you. Less work, less stress!

Nextcloud Talk AI summary

Visual collaboration

The interactive whiteboard enables teams to brainstorm and develop ideas in real-time – ideal for workshops and project planning.

Plan your polls

You can now save a poll as a draft, for quick publishing when the class has started. Need to use the same poll in a different class? Simply export it as a file and import it in the new room. At the end, export the poll as image or spreadsheet. Easy as pie!

Simplified teamwork

Documents can be collaboratively edited directly within chats or video calls. No need to switch to another window or tab! You can easily find chat messages with the search, leave and join open chat rooms or archive the ones you no longer follow, so you stay as connected as you need to be.

Let colleagues know what you think with reactions to chat messages, or animated reactions during calls. And if you need to make a point, you can use bold, italics, headers and even tables in your messages.

Mindfulness features

To promote a healthy meeting culture, Nextcloud Talk has a series of small features that help you be mindful of yourself and others. You can send silent chat messages and even start silent calls which don’t send notifications to everyone. User status communicates to colleagues if you’re available or not – the status will automatically change when you are in a call or have an appointment in your calendar, and your time zone is visible for others.

Need to deal with something – but not right now? You can mark a chat as unread, but also set a reminder on an individual message. You’ll get a notification at the time you set! You can also send a message to a special ‘Note to self’ chat, or put notes there by hand. Keep things organized for yourself. Perhaps favorite your Note to self chat so it’s always on top with other important chats?

You can also set your work hours and enable do-not-disturb outside those hours. Calls give a warning at the 1h mark and can now automatically end after a set time. And, during calls, you can see how much each participant talked so you can make sure even the quiet team members get to have their say.

High-security communication

Nextcloud Talk meets the highest security standards and can even be deployed in airgap environments, keeping all communication strictly away from the internet.

How open-source AI models can help you take control of your privacy

28 November 2024 at 17:06
How open-source AI models help you take control of your privacy

AI tools woven into the big tech ecosystems, some more “open” than others, some more quiet, often require a silent sacrifice in exchange for easy-to-access technology. An alternative is open-source AI models which, much like open-source software, have a potential to give you more transparency and control.

You can study and even modify the model you are using, and if you don’t need that — at least understand how your data is processed, stored and shared. Sounds like something the viral AI photo editing apps can’t promise, yet millions keep giving them access to their private photos every day.

Join us as we explore how open-source AI benefits users and, from the perspective of our Ethical AI rating, provide examples of AI models that can help you reclaim your privacy.

What are open-source AI models?

With more people becoming aware of how data economy works, earning user’s trust becomes more challenging to the AI providers. To appeal to more conscious users, many AI vendors label their technology open or open-source. But without consensus on what open-source AI is, such open-washing could raise many risks: surveillance, information bias, effects on the labor market and creative industries, and excessive energy usage — to name a few.

In attempt to battle the potentially harmful trend, the Open Source Initiative released its official Open Source Artificial Intelligence Definition (OSAID). According to the OSAID, an Open Source AI is an AI system made available under terms and in a way that grant the freedoms to:

  • Use the system for any purpose and without having to ask for permission.
  • Study how the system works and inspect its components.
  • Modify the system for any purpose, including to change its output.
  • Share the system for others to use with or without modifications, for any purpose.

Even though the work on this definition has been endorsed by many companies and individuals, there’s no consensus in the community on whether or not to accept it in its current state, or if the open-source AI is even ready to be defined.

We too think there’s room for improvement. But with or without concrete definition for the OS AI, we can tell how four main freedoms of open-source – to use, to study, to modify, and to share – can impact life of the the AI users.

How do users benefit from open-source AI?

Open source promotes freedom and empowers users to control their software – in this case, the AI – they rely on. Here are several examples of opens-source AI systems could directly benefit you as a user:

  • Proprietary AI can include hidden features like data harvesting for advertising and user profiling, embedded biases, and using your private data to refine the products without your consent. Open-source lets you make sure there are no hidden features or data backdoors – because you (and thousands, or even millions of others) can inspect the source code and understand how the software operates.
  • If your software is not anymore supported by a provider, you may lose valuable data like your AI’s memory of interactions. And even though normally you can export this data, there’s no guarantee it will be compatible with alternative models. With open-source, you don’t rely on a single vendor – the software will continue to exist, and you will retain full ownership. Moreover, you are not locked in the provider’s ecosystem of applications in order to fully benefit from their AI, no-one controls your costs, your updates and maintenance.
  • You can host your AI yourself or with a provider you trust, which means you fully control your data, make own decisions for your privacy, and maintain your compliance instead of relying on third-party services.

Nextcloud Ethical AI rating

At Nextcloud, we employ and integrate AI tools ourselves and we realize the risks brought by the evolving computer intelligence. That’s why we created the Ethical AI Rating that helps our users make the right decisions about what AI models to use in their work. It is more granular than the OSAID and more critical in areas like training data availability. For now, we will keep using it as it resonates with the unique needs of Nextcloud users.

Nextcloud Ethical AI

Nextcloud Ethical AI Rating is based on three principles:

  • Whether the training data is available and is free to use
  • Whether the software (both for inferencing and training) is open-source
  • Whether the trained model freely available for self-hosting

Based on how many of the criteria are met, a model receives Red 🔴, Orange 🟠, Yellow 🟡 or Green 🟢 rating.

Looking for open-source AI models to try? Consider these!

Nextcloud is not primarily an AI developer or vendor, so we don’t promote any AI products. Instead, we want to help our users choose the right tools to protect their privacy, and where needed, help them start using those tools through Nextcloud Hub. From the perspective of our Ethical AI Rating, here are several AI models that help you take control of your privacy.

With LocalAI, you can use several open-source models like GPT-Neo or GPT-J, running them locally with ability to modify and interact with them on your server. In this case, the app also gets the Green rating in our Ethical AI rating, fully meeting the criteria.

OpenNMT logo

OpenNMT 🟢

OpenNMT is a fully open-source AI translation framework available under MIT license. In Nextcloud, it can be used via LibreTranslate app that offers translation via your own server/API key.

Opus Helsinki NLP logo

Opus 🟢

Opus is a machine translation provider by University of Helsinki that runs locally on CPU and doesn’t let any private data leaves your servers. It meets all criteria of our rating.

Nomic AI logo

GPT4All Falcon by Nomic AI 🟢

GPT4All Falcon is an LLM that combines the Falcon language model with the GPT4All interface. It is available under Apache 2.0 license and runs locally on CPU.

There are models that do not match the criteria of the Green rating, but can be worth considering since they are self-hosted and have very permissive licenses, making them mostly safe to run locally:

Stable Diffusion logo

Self-hosted Stable Diffusion 🟡

Stable Diffusion is open-source model licensed under CreativeML Open RAIL-M License. Users have full access to the model and its code, can modify and redistribute it, given that it’s an on premise version. In Nextcloud, self-hosted Stable Diffusion can be used via LocalAI. We give it a Yellow rating, as the training data is not freely available in this case.

OpenAI_whisper_Logo

Whisper 🟡

In Nextcloud, you can use Whisper to enable speech-to-text conversion features. Whisper is available under the MIT License and has a Yellow rating due to limited availability of the training data.

Llama 2 🟡

Llama 2 is a free LLM by Meta that can be run on premise, and the software for training and inference of this model is open source. However, the training data is not freely available. It is offered under Llama 2 Community License.

We don’t limit our users’ choice of AI tools, and there are other models and apps that you can integrate in Nextcloud Hub and use with Nextcloud Assistant, including self-hosted models like NeuralBeagle14 7B, Smaug-72B and Meta’s Llama 3. Or famous AI like ChatGPT, DALL·E or Aleph Alpha – which are far from meeting all the criteria of our rating, but you still can easily integrate them in Nextcloud if you wish.

Build your own private AI platform – with Nextcloud Hub

Nextcloud Assistant is the first local AI assistant built into collaboration platform. It is integrated everywhere across Nextcloud Hub, helping you with your daily tasks while taking care of your privacy. Among tools supported by Nextcloud Assistant are chat with AI, text and image generation, email summaries, translation, dictation, inquiring about your own data with Context Chat, automated document creation with Context Write, and much more.

You can integrate AI models of your choice to enable those tools, creating a custom AI-powered environment according to your your privacy and security needs. And if needed, you can host your AI with one of the trusted SaaS providers in Europe, staying fully compliant with privacy regulations like GDPR and others.

Nextcloud Recognized with World Summit Award Germany

15 November 2024 at 17:03
Nextcloud Recognized with World Summit Award Germany

Nextcloud has been recognized with the World Summit Award Germany in the Government & Citizen Engagement category. WSA selects and promotes local digital innovation improving society, aiming to contribute to the United Nations’ agenda of sustainable development goals. In addition, Nextcloud is shortlisted for the World Summit Awards on a global level. The winners will be announced in January 2025.

What this award means for Nextcloud

The digital collaboration platform has been recognized for excelling in data sovereignty and giving customers and users control over their data. Nextcloud builds an open source platform for people to store their files, chat and videoconference, manage calendars, emails and more, that is not run by a single entity. Using a web interface and mobile apps, users don’t have to hand over their data to anybody else. Users, companies and governments can use Nextcloud software to build their own clouds, in a very easy way. And – hundreds of thousands have.

Data is concentrated in the hands of a very small number of companies. This is not good for society – especially with the rise of AI. Privacy is the foundation of democracy and society does not function well if all communication and collaboration is mediated by a few democratically unaccountable entities.

Frank Karlitschek
Founder and CEO of Nextcloud

Digital sovereignty for millions of users

Nextcloud is deeply rooted in the open source community and has become the most popular self-hosted alternative to the collaboration platforms of big tech companies. There are an estimated 500,000 servers on the internet running Nextcloud, some of these with millions of users. We do not track users but estimate to have between 25 and 50 million users in total.

For the business side, besides companies and other organzations, more than 600 EU institutions, federal and state ministries, as well as city and local governments globally rely on Nextcloud, including Germany, France, the Netherlands, Serbia, Canada, Australia, Brazil and the USA. The most popular self-hosted collaboration solution for 2 million users in the public sector and tens of millions of users overall around the globe.

To help the German public sector digitalise their services for citizens, Nextcloud has rolled out several efforts. Latest example is the launch of Nextcloud Flow, the first fully open source, integrated process automation platform.

WSA awards digital solutions with impact on society

The World Summit Awards (WSA) aim to promote the best digital solutions with impact on society. It is a non-monetary award system with a focus on sustainable knowledge transfer through a worldwide network. The award was launched in 2003 and aims to contribute to the United Nations’ agenda of sustainable development goals by recognizing local digital content with societal impact and showcasing the wealth and diversity of innovative applications.

Open source and Nextcloud in government: Insights from Sven Thomsen, Schleswig-Holstein’s CIO

23 October 2024 at 18:00

In this episode, we explore how open source solutions are revolutionizing the way governments work, from collaboration and knowledge sharing to digital sovereignty and artificial intelligence.

Join us as we learn about the world of open source in government with Sven Thomsen, CIO of Schleswig-Holstein in Germany. Sven shares the factors that influenced their decision to adopt open source solutions, their implementation strategies along the way, and lessons learned from the adoption of open source in Munich.

We also discuss Schleswig-Holstein’s 10-year journey into open source, from desktop solutions to database systems, and how it has become a key part of their digital sovereignty strategy. Sven shares his insights on the current discussion in Germany about the importance of open standards, open source, and open interfaces in promoting the idea of European IT resiliency.

We also hear about the political and technical challenges they faced, including the successful implementation of Nextcloud as a central hub for collaboration and knowledge sharing in their federal state. Sven will share his thoughts on the “hidden champions” of open source and how Nextcloud’s new data automation platform has helped them solve some of the most difficult challenges in implementing the Online Access Act (OZG).

With AI based tools in Nextcloud, we were able to close an automation gap that we weren’t able to close with rule-based automations. Implementing AI-based microservices into the ecosystem of Nextcloud, and following Nextcloud’s very good AI strategy, we were able to implement something that is perfect for an organization like Schleswig-Holstein.

Federation: a foundational concept for digital sovereignty?

17 October 2024 at 15:59
Federation: a foundational concept for digital sovereignty?

Federation offers a solution to the challenges posed by centrally controlled public cloud applications by letting users communicate and collaborate between independent servers and even independent apps. In this article, we explain how federation works, what features you can use with federation in Nextcloud, and discover how it can help businesses and governments achieve digital sovereignty.

Whether you’re new to federation features or already familiar with them, let’s start with the basics.

Understanding the federated internet

It’s a well-known fact that on-premises software offers more autonomy compared to public cloud tools in several ways, largely due to the level of control organizations have over their infrastructure and data. Self-hosting is a definition of decentralization in the realm of collaborative technologies. An important question arises when considering self-hosting: how can we collaborate effectively using decentralized software?

The answer lies in federation – it’s the key to making decentralized collaboration possible. To understand federation, you need to ask yourself – how does email work? Email is, in fact, federation in action: it operates through a network of independent servers connected via standard protocols and allowing users from different domains to exchange messages with ease via single client.

Or take Mastodon, a federated social network where each instance is a separate server run by an independent entity or community. Each user can sign up on an instance they prefer, and then follow, reply to, or message users on other instances, making communication across the entire network seamless.

In Nextcloud, user’s Federated Cloud ID works similar to an email address or a Mastodon handle, allowing them to exchange data across servers: share files and and collaborate on documents, communicate in group chats and make audio and video calls.

Federation and digital sovereignty

Federation enables private users, organizations, and their departments to use independent infrastructure, hosting their software locally with customized security and compliance measures. Each entity operates its own platform while staying connected to a larger network that supports cross-server collaboration. This decentralized architecture reduces reliance on a single service provider. It also frees you from vendor lock-in, allowing you to choose a trusted provider and work with the software that meets your needs, all while retaining the ability to collaborate seamlessly across different platforms.

Regulators are responding to a growing backlash against big tech firms from users who perceive their behaviour as market abuse, with the term ‘malicious compliance’ being used. This trend causes a growing interest in decentralization technologies.

Frank Karlitschek
Nextcloud founder

Finally, self-hosting with federated features gives you full ownership and control over your data. You choose your own encryption and own access controls, or get more flexible where others can’t, pursuing only your own compliance objectives. Companies and governments can avoid numerous risks by not having to store data under unfavourable regulations, break free from the privacy terms of large cloud providers, and enjoy freedom without being controlled by foreign entities.

Federation in Nextcloud

In Nextcloud Hub, it is already possible to do a lot when it comes to federated collaboration, as we mentioned above. For example, you can share files across servers and even collaborate on them, while federation in Nextcloud Talk enables you to join group chats and run meetings on another server.

Besides better security, easier compliance and more independence, there’s also convenience: you don’t need to send invites or create guest accounts, or set up your own on somebody’s instance. Just use your own account and stay within familiar interface of your home platform — you won’t even notice any difference.

Sure, there are certain limitations, for example, you can’t create private federated chats in Nextcloud Talk yet. But we already support many essential and handy features like polls, markdown and user mentions. And federation in Nextcloud constantly evolves as we explore more abilities of the Federated Cloud Sharing API.

OCM, a foundation for federation features in Nextcloud

Federated Cloud Sharing API in Nexctloud has been invented by Nextcloud founders Frank Karlitschek and Bjoern Schießle. It is a collaboratively developed standard that is a part of Open Cloud Mesh (OCM), an initiative of the GÉANT Association, a European collaboration on e-infrastructure and services for research and education.

Federated tools available in Nextcloud

Federated file sharing

Share documents and media to users in other Nextcloud Hub instances for viewing, editing and collaboration.

Federated chatting

Create group chats with users from different servers and use many essential chat tools.

Federated calls

Make audio and video calls with Nextcloud Talk among users from different servers.

How to configure federated features in your Nextcloud Hub

If you wish to configure and manage federation tools in your Nextcloud, you need to enable the Federation app and follow a few easy steps:

  1. Enable the Federation app.
  2. Allow your users to share and receive files from other servers.
  3. Create a list of trusted servers to enable federation features for them.

Read our documentation for detailed instructions on enabling federation features and federated sharing, and creating federated conversations in Nextcloud Talk.

Collaborate on digital whiteboards online with Nextcloud Whiteboard

8 October 2024 at 16:04
Collaborate on digital whiteboards online with Nextcloud Whiteboard

Sometimes you need to illustrate graphically what words cannot convey. And with a digital whiteboard tool, you don’t need drawing or design skills to do that. Read on to discover Nextcloud Whiteboard, a brand new app among Nextcloud’s collaborative tools launched with Nextcloud Hub 9.

Nextcloud Whiteboard, an online digital whiteboard

Digital whiteboards, just like their analogue predecessors, are useful in many settings from a classroom to a busy team meeting. For instance, you can use a whiteboard during a brainstorming session to sketch, map out strategies, or visualize workflows. Or assist your project planning by outlining project timelines, assigning tasks, and tracking progress. Whiteboards are also essential to online teaching and training, allowing educators to make lessons more engaging and dynamic by providing a space to interact, annotate, and visualize concepts together.

With Nextcloud Whiteboard, you can do all of that within your own secure environment and while enjoying seamless integration in your file system and video conferencing tools.

Nextcloud Whiteboard is a collaborative whiteboard tool featuring hand-drawn style that is based on Excalidraw app. It lets you enjoy lots of editing features and support for images, web embeds, shapes and other objects. You can easily save and share entire whiteboards and separate sketches to share ideas or invite your team to work together. Nextcloud Whiteboard is a part of our Nextcloud Office bundle that features various universal collaborative tools for editing and data processing in Nextcloud Hub.

Infinite canvas and a variety of instruments

Nextcloud Whiteboard has unlimited canvas, meaning that you can create as many sketches, schemes and illustrations as you need, all in one file. You can invite dozens of users to collaborate with you and let them enjoy their own space on the whiteboard, or move from one task to another without having to wipe clean your valuable ideas.

Many elements, including simple lines, shapes and texts, are designed to resemble hand drawings, adding a relaxed mood to your whiteboards and letting you create freely without worrying about perfection. What matters is your ideas and an ability to express them, and Nextcloud Whiteboard has plenty of tools to make that possible.

Create a digital whiteboard from Nextcloud Files

Where do we start? No need to look for the Nextcloud Whiteboard icon on your toolbar — it opens automatically when you create or open a whiteboard file. To start using Nextcloud Whiteboard from your file system, you just need to create a new whiteboard file from your “+” menu.

Nextcloud Whiteboard - create from Nextcloud Files

Launch a whiteboard in Nextcloud Talk

Want to work in a whiteboard during a Nextcloud Talk call? You don’t need to go looking for a blank file — just create it right from the attachment menu of the chat. As usual, you can pick one of the available templates to save time coming up with the structure. Once created, the new whiteboard appears in the chat, accessible to all participants.

Host engaging, interactive meetings

We introduced Nextcloud Whiteboard integration features in Nextcloud Talk to enable a variety of new ways to use our video conferencing platform. For example, you can turn your meeting into a virtual classroom or organize an interactive online workshop. Thanks to infinite canvas space, you can use one whiteboard for many different tasks, no matter the scale and number of collaborators.

Nextcloud Hub 9 Whiteboard basic actions

When you open or create a whiteboard file from the attachment menu, Nextcloud Whiteboard will open the canvas in front of you, without showing it to other participants in your video stream. To join you in editing, they need to click on the whiteboard file inside the conversation and activate their own editor. Now you can start collaborating in real time right inside your group chat, or present your digital whiteboard to others live (make sure to try the Laser Pointer tool!).

Create free drawings

You can draw anything with a hand drawing tool and apply settings like line color, automatic background fill type and color for drawn objects, opacity, and stroke width. The brush is dynamic: it reacts to your motions and drawing speed as you draw, making it look and feel like a real hand drawing!

Build and customize shapes

To save time drawing your schemes and sketches, you can use one of the available shape presets: rectangle, diamond and circle. Once created you can adjust the shape’s appearance by configuring its settings in the left panel.

Nextcloud Whiteboard - shapes

You can also save shapes and other objects to your personal library to reuse them later, or add shapes created by other users to Nextcloud Whiteboard from Excalidraw library.

Draw schemes with lines and arrows

Arrows and lines in Nextcloud Whiteboard give you a lot of freedom. You can stick them to other objects to preserve scheme structure no matter how you change their positions, bind them freely and as many times as you wish, and even add labels.

Nextcloud Whiteboard - lines and arrows.

You can create a straight arrow or line quickly by pressing your cursor and simply dragging the arrow’s end. To create a complex, bound arrow or line, click on the starting point once to begin drawing, and then lead your line by clicking on each location where you want it to bind. If you hover it near an object while drawing, you can stick it to that object in the desired place.

Perform various actions with objects and lines

You can perform various actions with drawn objects and lines. For example, adjust multiple stroke and shape settings, change color, duplicate them, add hyperlinks, and more. You can also click on an object to rotate, resize and reshape it the way you want to, and even move the pivot points of your lines.

Nextcloud Whiteboard - arrow and line settings

Once your digital whiteboard grows complex, rearranging your objects and sketches might become difficult (and messy!). But Frame tool has got you covered — you can enable it from the right menu of the top toolbar and group any objects you desire in a frame to perform bulk actions with ease.

Type and format texts

Using text tool, you can add any texts to your whiteboards. If you don’t like the default hand-drawn look of the font, you can change the font family to Normal or Code. You can also change the text alignment and opacity and, of course, it’s color. Don’t worry if you made a typo — texts stay editable after saving.

Nextcloud Whiteboard - writing texts and changing text settings

Embed pictures and videos

Using image tool, upload an image or simply drag and image file onto the whiteboard to add it to your canvas. You can also add videos and other web objects using the Web Embed tool from the rightmost drop-down menu of the toolbar.

Nextcloud Whiteboard - embedding

Save and share your digital whiteboard

You can quickly export your whiteboards and even separate objects as JPG or SVG images to share, embed, print or upload them anywhere you want. Just click the small menu icon on your left and export your content as an image with desired display settings. You can also simply copy it co clipboard to quickly share it in an email or chat without downloading.

Nextcloud Whiteboard - export

You can share your whiteboards in Nextcloud Hub to team members or external collaborators to invite them for collaboration or demonstrate your ideas, just like you share any other files. This is possible with the sidebar share menu where you can choose recipients, secure your link with passwords, set expiry date and apply other protection settings, instantly share the file via email, and much more.

About the speaker

Schleswig-Holstein is the northernmost state in Germany. Part of the State Chancellery of Schleswig-Holstein is the Central IT-Management department. They are responsible for the provision and operation of the centralized IT infrastructure for the whole state administration. They’re made up of 25,000 employees – one including Felix Gebauer, the Program Lead and Project Manager for the transition to Open-Source Software.

Mr. Gebauer is responsible for the successful implementation of Schleswig-Holstein’s open source strategy. It’s his job to introduce Nextcloud as the new key collaboration platform to the state administration and ensure its roll-out of Nextcloud.

“The main reasons for choosing Nextcloud were the wide distribution of Nextcloud especially in public administration, Nextcloud’s strong and active community, and the wide range of different collaboration features within Nextcloud which provide solutions for many use cases in Schleswig-Holstein’s state administration.”

Felix Gebauer, Program Lead and Project Manager for the transition to Open-Source Software in the Schleswig-Holstein

Building a digitally sovereign AI for the public sector

As part of the AI strategy of the German state, they are collaborating with Nextcloud to create a generative language model for the state administration that is adapted to the specifics of administrative texts. Minister of Digitization and Head of the State Chancellery Dirk Schrödter backs the collaboration in a statement:

“In the future, we will make AI services available to colleagues in the state administration directly at the workplace. We want to drive the development of digitally sovereign and open solutions in addition to the use of existing AI services. Because, the administration of the future will work in an automated, algortihmized, cloudified and data-based way. To make this vision of the future a reality, we must provide the appropriate tools. This also creates value and jobs in our domestic digital economy.”

Germany recognises Microsoft as tech giant

30 September 2024 at 22:53

3 years after a formal antitrust complaint by Nextcloud and 30 other European tech companies the German antitrust authorities (“Bundeskartellamt”) have announced that Microsoft is now “subject to extended abuse control” as they are determined to be of “paramount significance across markets”. The good news, quoting their announcement:

Based on this provision, the Bundeskartellamt can prohibit companies which have such positions of power from engaging in anti-competitive practices.

As you might be aware, in 2021 we assembled a coalition of like minded European tech companies and filed a complaint with the European Commission’s antitrust authorities. There has been virtually no movement on that for years. We also filed a complaint with the German antitrust authority, which in 2023 announced the start of an investigation to determine if Microsoft might have a lot of market power. After a year and a half, they are now at that point. An investigation thus has not been started, but the doors are open for them to look into the actual behaviour of the tech giant from Redmond.

3 years of more anticompetitive behaviour from Microsoft

In the mean time, Microsoft has increased its anti-competitive behaviour. The company proceeded with integrating OneDrive deeper into Windows and making it harder to use Windows without OneDrive account. It also blocked attempts by Nextcloud to gain access to interoperability API’s that would allow Nextcloud users to save files to Nextcloud from Microsoft Office apps. And it accidentally uploaded user files to OneDrive even if those users didn’t want it to do that.

The European Commission has made little progress on the complaint we filed. Interestingly, a later complaint by another American big tech firm, Salesforce (Slack) about Teams bundling with Microsoft 365 did result in a relatively prompt investigation.

Quoting our CEO and founder, Frank, from our press release:

“Over the past three years, Nextcloud has submitted extensive documentation and other evidence of anti-competitive behavior by Microsoft. The Federal Cartel Office today determined that Microsoft has particular market power. This is an important step to prohibit future anti-competitive practices by the US company.

This is an important step forward, and we look forward to an investigation.

Constanze Kurz: mass surveillance, Snowden, and the future of digital politics

27 September 2024 at 20:35

Your host Brent Gervais is joined by special guest Constanze Kurz – German computer scientist, hacker, activist and spokeswoman for the Chaos Computer Club (CCC). Constanze celebrates 20 years of Netzpolitik, an independent reader-supported organization that has been at the forefront of digital politics, regulation, and tech surveillance in Germany, and shares her insights on some of the most pressing issues facing us today.

Edward Snowden’s disclosures in 2013 were not only revelatory but also catalyzed a necessary discussion around mass surveillance and yet Constanze argues we’ve since lost momentum in this critical conversation. She expresses concern that, as the public has become increasingly complacent, the intelligence services have grown even more powerful and influential.

We are in the age of mass surveillance. The problem is most of the public doesn’t discuss it anymore, and that its really a problem because what Snowden did was not only revealing, but also driving a debate. And we don’t have that debate anymore, and that really frustrates and concerns me.– Constanze Kurz

We reflect on the changing landscape of hacktivism and investigative reporting, and how policy is struggling to keep pace with modern technological advancements.

Constanze also reminds us that there’s still much work to be done in addressing the pressing issues facing us today – from mass surveillance and data protection to predictive policing and platform capitalism.
